Why I've reverted back to high-street beauty brands.

Hey all, so this is my first post in a while because I've just been bogged down with so much work, but during this busy period I found myself making a few decisions regarding skincare and such.

You may or may not recall this post about all these new high-end foundations that I couldn't wait to try, well, I tried them - and needless to say, they were all lousy! One of my first posts on this blog was a review for Maybellines Dream Matte Mousse foundation, one that I've been using for 5 years and I loved it. So why did I go on the hunt for a new foundation? Well, I wanted to find a foundation that gave a little extra coverage and lasted longer and I found it with Lancome Teint Idole 24h foundation. But, after months of searching and trying out  new foundations, I'm returning to Maybelline, why? Well, here's why...

My search for a foundation with more coverage started when I was about 16 and I went to get some Mac Studio Fix foundation from the Mac counter in Debenhams. I absolutely loved how the foundation looked - I basically looked like I'd been photoshopped, however, the foundation broke my skin out terribly, so it went straight in the bin. And more recently, I found that Clinique foundations are awful, they oxidise, go patchy, don't stay on, look terrible etc etc, so they also went in the bin. Laura Mercier was almost fantastic, didn't break me out but didn't exactly change my skin much either, it also felt rather too heavy on my skin and looked a bit cakey, so I finished that off and didn't bother with that one again either. Bobbi Brown was nice, but was not worth the money because the finish and the way it blended was no different to a cheaper foundation such as L'Oreal, so I threw that one out too. And then there was Lancome, oh Lancome, so perfect...so NEARLY perfect I should say. It blended superbly, a little went a long way, the finish was exquisite, it lasted all day and still looked fresh when I returned home, the colour match was fab...I could not fault it!

...until I was covered in spots. The Lancome Teint Idole formula is fragranced and, in order for it to live up to it's 'will last 24 hours' claim, it has to be a little heavier than other foundations and, although it didn't feel heavy (it actually felt really light) it was obviously heavy enough to clog and upset my sensitive skin. So this sparked a decision for me to actually pay attention to the needs of my skin - fragranced products are no good for sensitive skin, so I reluctantly chucked out that foundation too. And here we are, back to Maybelline.

It should have occurred to me earlier in my foundation trials that, after 5 years of using Maybelline, I'd rarely had any skin upsets, but I just put it down to 'my skin is used to this one and it needs time to adjust to a new foundation' nope, it doesn't. I went onto the Maybelline website and Dream Matte Mousse (along with Dream Satin Liquid foundation) are marketed as:

  • Fragrance free
  • Dermatologically tested
  • Non comodogenic (non pore-clogging)
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
It was that last one that did it for me - suitable for sensitive skin, hooray! I have super sensitive skin, so from now on, I'm not using anything on my face unless it specifically says 'suitable for sensitive skin' - it's taken me years of experimenting with new products, but after break outs, rashes and blemishes I can honestly say I've had enough, I want my usual glowing, blemish free skin back and if it kills me, I'll get it!
